Look at what I’m learning about my audience from detailed video analytics
on Feb 11, 2010 - 3:56 PM PSTThis is part of the behind-the-scenes section of Mixergy, which I call etc.
A few fans have noticed that I’m using Wistia as Mixergy’s video player and asked about it. Wistia is a video player that gives detailed analytics on viewership. Chris, the co-founder of the company, is a fan of my work, and gave me an account so I could see how Wistia can improve my site, and we’re trying to find a way for him to sponsor Mixergy. Instead of running banners, he & I want to find ways to show you my stats. While we work out a way to do that, I thought I’d share a screenshot so you can get a sense of what I’m learning by having detailed stats.

So this graph is a result of how many episodes?

Probably one, unless he gives financials at exactly the same time in each episode.

I don't think I ever rewinded because of the financials.
I rewind because something was said that sounded interesting but I wasn't paying attention because I do other stuff while listening.
Andrew, I would totally change the format.
Offer a transcript like lynda.com does (I'm gonna say this until you're tired of hearing it) and let me jump to what's of interest to me.
Huge time saver for us and we will come back more often!
A format like that would be bad news for the advertisers, but since 25% leaves it would be good news for you, IF you have an alternative for those ads.
Try selling bigger display ads. Shopify, Wufoo, Grasshopper, are you listening?
There should be a video on Mixergy about them.
Do more textlink ads near those transcripts.
Offer us some related how-to videos.
Do some of those videos with your sponsors.
Make sure we know that's what it is.
I would listen to it if it helps me!
You did an interview with a lawyer, guys like that should sponsor Mixergy!
Ask your guests 3 books they would like to recommend, then post an affiliate link in those transcripts. Transcripts are a goldmine!
Make us look and we will see the sponsors more often.

Andrew, very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
So what about building the sponsor ads somewhere the middle of the interview instead of the beginning? The viewers are engaged by then and having a breather in the middle also allows both you and the intervewee a chance to refocus.

Kudos to Wistia for creative programming.

Pretty cool tool .. but not sure about your conclusion…. 25% leave because of ads…. Maybe they were leaving no matter what… can you track if they leave then come back later? Or they switch to another video…. How deep Wistia analytics goes…. I check their website and I could not find the right answer…

Hey Guys, I'm Chris from Wistia. This kind of graph shows the engagement across a single video. We've done analysis across larger groups of videos which you can check that out here: http://wistia.com/blog/does-length-matter-it-do…
The idea is that by understanding what's effective in each video you can learn what kind of structure keeps your audience engaged.

Edit: Wrote the same thing as Ricky

Very cool!

Don't forget when reviewing these stats that your interviews are consumed in multiple formats. The end of “casual conversation” is about the point that I normally drop out from the video. At that point either the audio is headed to my iPhone or I just skim the transcript.

I disagree, andrew I say stay focused on interviews, you have so much content as is, we don't need random add ons. Stay on with what you're doing, you're the best at it imo.
Also, stats are great. Wistia sounds like a cool company with good ideas. Data is power eh

Do they all have a similar pattern, or can you categorize some programs as, say, exponentially decaying, flat, lots of rewinds, etc.? And does the content of the program correlate with the shape of the curve?

Very cool Andrew! Just one question, which software do you use to draw the arrows, circles and texts over the image?? Thanks a lot!

Sorry about the delayed response. This is very helpful.
Here's a detailed response:
- I can't do the lynda.com-like transcript because it costs too much and
takes up too much time. I need to turn these interviews around quickly.
- Where do you think the video ads should go? Are you suggesting I do
interviews with my sponsors? I've wanted to do that, but worried that it
wouldn't be perceived well. I'm starting to hear from others that I should
do it.
- You're saying Google ads near the transcript? I thought that didn't bring
in much money. I'm going to reformat those transcripts and sell one or two
ads in them for $600 each. What do you think?
- I don't think I have the time to create how-to videos, but I can do more
detailed interviews. What'd you think of the format I used with the lawyer?
- I could get a law firm to sponsor, but I don't have space. I should raise
ad prices soon since I'm turning sponsors away.
- Do you really think there's revenue in book affiliate links? I tend to
think those produce peanuts.
Thanks for all this. I appreciate the help K.
