The Results of Jason Nazar’s Viral Experiment

Posted on Sep 24, 2008 - 2:05 PM PST

To demonstrate some of the viral marketing ideas that he taught at the Mixergy Viral Forum, Jason Nazar, CEO of DocStoc, came up with an interesting experiment.

He said that if anyone in the audience posted a message about him on twitter, he’d give them contact information for the top bloggers. The message: “You have to follow @JasonNazar.”

As you can see from the chart above, the experiment increased his Twitter followers. It wasn’t a huge spike, but it was a nice increase over 48 hours. And if the experiment was done with a broader internet audience, it looks like the growth would be higher.

What I also noticed is that it got people talking about him.

What do you think of the experiment? Are there any other viral tests we should try?

Nice, but I think it takes more than that to say a “viral” campaign really worked. Seems like a pretty thin experiment and a thin definition of “viral”.

  2. Joseph Hsieh Says:

Seems like a good lift.. it’d be nice if we knew what the demographics of those who were more inclined to respond… (wink)

  3. Andrew Warner Says:

Nate: Yeah, it was a very simple test. But if you’re getting people to spread the word about a site/person/whatever, isn’t that “viral”?

  4. Andrew Warner Says:

Joseph: It would be better to have more data on who’s responding. What we can guess with pretty solid accuracy is that they’re online marketers (because they came to the event) and they’re in tech (because Jason was offering a list of tech blogs.)

That doesn’t tell us everything about them, but it does say a lot.

  5. Olivia Kuhn-Lloyd Says:

I participated. Wonder how many of my followers began following Jason.

[...] #5 The Experiment – To illustrate how some of the ideas we discussed worked, Jason said that if anyone in the audience Twittered “You must follow @JasonNazar” he’d give them his Rolodex of bloggers. (See the results here.) [...]

  7. Al Says:

I participated but never got the file from him. Guess he only wanted more followers !!

  8. Anne Says:

I had the same problem. He said to e-mail him with the twitter link, but I can’t find his e-mail anywhere, and he never gave it to us. Are we supposed to contacts info@hiscompany?
